Mayan Ruins Mam Kingdom Western Highlands Pre-hispanic History Mountains and Ravines

Zaculeu Travel Guide

Zaculeu, located in the Guatemalan Highlands, occupies a strategic site that was difficult for enemies to reach. Also known as Xinabajul, meaning “place among ravines” in the Mam language, it was the political and ceremonial capital of the Mam, one of the largest Mayan ethnic groups.

The city’s architecture stands out from other Mayan sites, showing clear influences from the powerful Mexican city of Teotihuacan. Zaculeu is also renowned for the skill of its artisans, who created intricate figures from jade and pyrite—a challenging material to work by hand. These distinctive archaeological pieces reflect the exceptional craftsmanship of the ancient Mam civilization.
