Transportation in Guatemala
Private transportation is the most effective way for tourists to travel around Guatemala. To ensure everything runs smoothly, we recommend confirming these arrangements prior to your arrival. Local transportation providers use clean cars and vans, are insured in case of unforeseen circumstances and are registered with the Guatemalan Tourism Institute (INGUAT). Our aim is to list every mode of transport in Guatemala on this website to help you plan your next trip.
Private Transportation
The most comfortable way to get around Guatemala is by private transportation with a qualified local driver. An experienced driver will accompany you throughout your journey, from pick-up to drop-off at the airport. This option gives you freedom, since you can decide how, when and where you want to travel. All vehicles used in the tourism industry are marked as official tourist transport. Local drivers are trustworthy and knowledgeable about the safest and most efficient routes.
Local Flights
Guatemala has two international airports: Mundo Maya (FRS) in Santa Elena, Petén, and La Aurora (GUA) in Guatemala City. As Guatemala City serves as the entry point to all the country's regions, it is best to arrive there. Travellers wishing to see the Mayan ruins of Tikal in a short amount of time typically use Petén Airport. Charter flights by small plane or helicopter are also available, and if you book a private trip, you can land at a number of other smaller airports.
Shuttle Services
This choice is particularly favoured by travellers on a tight budget and backpackers. Shuttle buses connect the most popular locations, making it easy for tourists to see the best of Guatemala. To guarantee your seat, you must reserve it one day before departure. We advise you to exercise caution at all times and keep your possessions visible.
Public Transportation
All Guatemalan cities and communities are connected by public buses and minivans. However, these buses do not have set timetables or designated stops. This makes public transport more difficult to use for both locals and tourists from other countries. The Transmetro is the best way to get around Guatemala City by bus. It's inexpensive, quick, safe and has stop signs.
Rural Collective Transportation
The colorful buses that connect the majority of Guatemala's major destinations are known as "chicken buses," and they serve as a means of rural transportation. Be aware that these buses don't run everywhere, thus in order to reach a particular place, you might need to switch from one bus to a minivan. Since there is no actual speed limit and drivers typically pick up local tourists who are waiting on the streets in order to increase their earnings, the experience may get crazy. You might wind up like birds in a cage in a packed bus. Since these drivers won't speak English, if you still choose to go on the expedition, start improving your Spanish.
Taxis and Uber
There are two types of taxi in Guatemala City: yellow and white. You can take a white taxi at any time. However, these cabs aren't the safest option and frequently overcharge, even regular Guatemalans. Uber or yellow taxis are the best options. Both are quite affordable and safe.
Car Rental
Both international airports have car rental agencies, some of which also have offices in certain hotels. To ensure you have everything you need, it is advisable to complete your reservation before you arrive. Please be aware that driving in Guatemala can be chaotic. Although there are signs on major highways, we recommend using a GPS to easily navigate Guatemala's unusual streets.
