Livingston is a town in Izabal Department, eastern Guatemala, at the mouth of the Río Dulce at the Gulf of Honduras. The town serves as the municipal seat of the municipality of the same name. It was Guatemala’s main port on the Caribbean Sea before the construction of nearby Puerto Barrios.

Livingston is a colorful and relaxed fishermen village, where Rio Dulce encounters the Caribbean Sea; it is also home of the only Garífuna Culture in Guatemala, and is rich in traditions of African origin, with a mix of Garifuna, Mayan and Ladino culture.

Livingston is named after American jurist and politician Edward Livingston who wrote the Livingston Codes which were used as the basis for the laws of the liberal government of the United Provinces of Central America in the early 19th century.

Livingston can only be accessed by boats traveling across the bay from Puerto Barrios or down the Rio Dulce from Fronteras. If you have time you have to take the boat in Fronteras so you can enjoy the ride down the river and visit the caves and hot springs located on the way.

Livingston is the perfect place for your Caribbean adventure, from here you can visit Playa Blanca, a white sand beach with clear water, palm trees and sun, located at 40 minutes by boat; Siete Altares where you can enjoy nature and take a bath in one of the seven natural ponds, at 15 minutes by boat; you can also visit Rio Dulce and marvel with its natural beauty; San Felipe Castle; Belize cays; and other rivers, beaches and natural reserves.

In Livingston you will find hotels, restaurants, TMS, banks, souvenir shops, tour operators and other services to make your stay one to never forget.

During the peak season and during the celebration of the Garifuna day you can appreciate the cultural expression of the region, like the Yancunú, La Punta and Jungujugu dances, parades, traditional food, religious celebrations and music of ancient rhythms to popular rhythms of the area like socca, samba and punta.
